there is simple beauty in the stars
and how they struggle to shine over downtown
god’s light can’t compete with man made monoliths
i thought all this walking back west to chelsea
we all pretend to find solace in nature
the quiet stillness etched amongst the trees
we observe the natural order and think
following our instincts must make life easy
five minutes after leaving the woods
we chase complications like they feed us
shout “goddamn” into our expensive bedsheets
wonder what made such a mess of things

and in the afterglow
of whiskey and blow
we think we find something real
but when we sober up
drink from our coffee cups
we lie about how we really feel

we’re pushed together by public transportation
shoulder to shoulder, regardless of destination
there should be some epic metaphor here
but we’re too busy keeping our heads down to think of it
when the winter comes we’re packed up in thick coats
headphones dangling out from under our hoods
we’re all so addicted to technology
that prerecorded sound trumps conversation
you can go twenty blocks downtown and feel like
you’re in a completely different city
manhattan serves a unique alienation
we’re always lonely but never alone

and in the afterglow
